
10 Configuring Your System for the First Time
Configuring TCP/IP Using a Static IP Address
The following procedure is required if a static TCP/IP configuration was previously used. By default,
systems running Windows Storage Server 2003 operating systems attempt to obtain the TCP/IP
configuration from a DHCP server on your network.
NOTE: To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Administrators group or the Network Configuration
Operators group on the local computer.

Settings
→
Control Panel
→
Network Connections

Right-click the network connection that you want to configure, and click
Properties
.

On the
General
tab (for a local area connection) or the
Networking
tab (for all other connections),
click
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
and click
Properties
.

Use the following IP address
.

If you are configuring a local area connection, type the appropriate information in the
IP address
,
Subnet mask
, and
Default gateway
fields.
If you are configuring a connection, type the IP address in the
IP address
field.

Use the following DNS server addresses

In the
Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server
field, type the primary and secondary DNS
server addresses.

Configure additional IP addresses, if required. Otherwise, go to step 9.

TCP/IP Address
, type an IP address and subnet mask in the appropriate fields, and click

.

Repeat step b and step c for each additional IP address.

Configure additional default gateways, if required. Otherwise, go to step 10.

On the
IP Settings
tab under
Default gateways

Add
.

Under
TCP/IP Gateway Address
in the
Gateway
field, type the IP address of the default gateway.

To manually configure a default route metric, clear the
Automatic
metric
check box and type a
metric in the
Metric
field.

Add

Repeat step b through step d for each default gateway (if required).

Configure a custom metric for this connection, if required. Otherwise, go to step 11.

Clear the
Automatic metric
check box.

In the
Interface metric
field, type the appropriate metric.
